Unfair
After lap twenty, she looked at her smartwatch and realized her heart rate was strangely low. How? She stopped—placed hand on chest, then two fingers on neck and wrist but felt nothing. No pulse.
At the cardiologist’s the next day, she was told something unheard of had happened to her: she had no heart. No organ, that is.
Amid sobs and screams she stormed out, threatening to sue.
Unable to sleep that night after such fateful news, she swung out of bed and geared up.
She ran for six hours straight. Stopped only because the sun was rising and she had to go to work.
Marathons soon became too easy, so she took to mountaineering.
Aided by timely, enhancing drugs and a lack of fear of heart disease, she pushed herself to a breaking point… that never broke.
Yet, after smashing every record, there was still something missing in her life.
When she got pregnant, she worried about her child not having a heart either. Though, after mulling over it, the extent of what two tireless, unfeeling bodies could achieve in this overly treacly and unfair world made her smile.
