She cuts the cake and hands the first slice to him—her friend from work. Then, she sits next to him and they chat for a long while. She laughs and throws her hair back.
Everyone notices this except her. It’s her birthday. She’s happy, giddy, unconcerned.
When the party is over and their children are asleep, the husband asks about this friend from work. She tells him everything: he’s recently divorced, has one kid, just moved to the city, doesn’t like sports but likes to cook and dance.
The husband tries hard not to get angry, but his wife’s overeager tone gnaws at him.
The next day, the husband meets with a man they call the Sicario at a dive on the east side of town.
Two days later, when the husband casually asks his wife again how her friend from work is doing, she bursts into tears.
The husband soothes her, tells her everything’s gonna be alright. A grin crosses his lips.
